Anne, what you're thinking of is a web site "upgrade" that Yahoo made a while back, and you're right that a lot of people had trouble with the new version while the classic version continued to work as before. What Michele is talking about a paid upgrade to the email service itself that, among other things, lets you send and receive your mail using Mail or Entourage (or whatever mail program) instead of doing it via the web site.
